Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
It all depends which birds you have visiting and which ones you would like to attract. A good quality mixed seed is advisable if you only have one feeder or if funds will run to it have a second feeder with Sunflower Hearts. Sparrows are the least fussy eaters but if you want to see Goldfinch or Greenfinch SH are a necessity.Wren wrote: Mon Oct 24, 2022 3:52 pm Hi this subject has always been a strange one. For the record I use a cheapish seed mix in four different sized feeders plus a fifth with SH. I use the cheap mix because the feeders get raided by feral pigeons and I refuse to pay good money to encourage them.
Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
I don't have any port feeders but use sunflower hearts and kibbled ones. White and red millet. Suet pellets and calci worms. Also live mealworms for the pied wagtails and occasional robin and blackbird. Oh, and sultanas or raisins.
Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
I have fed all sorts of food - various seed mixes, sunflower seeds, niger seeds (to attract Goldfinches - unsuccessfully) peanuts etc. Now feed sunflower hearts as this is the choice of the birds themselves. They gobble it up. Also feed suet fat balls and suet blocks.
Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
Now it has started to turn cold I have been putting out suet balls.
Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
Peckish mixed seed in the ground feeders, although I'll have to swap that to a cheapie as I'm skint at the moment! Sunflower hearts in the hanging feeders - never got finches with mixed seed in them.
Soaked raisins for the blackbirds and starlings - and two of the sparrows, breadcrumbs for everyone about once a week, and now peanuts for the rook.
Occasionally mealworms, but they don't last long. Gave up with fat balls as the starlings demolish them in about an hour, so it took longer to make them than they were outside.

Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
I use sunflower seeds which mainly attract Goldfinches and Greenfinches. I've had Siskin and Redpoll in times pat but haven't seen one for some time.
A mixed seed feeder seems to keep the sparrows happy along with the starlings. The feral pigeons try to get in on the act but have trouble clinging on. I buy fatballs as I can't be bothered at trying to make my own.

Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
Here I put out mixed seed, mini suet pellets, ordinary suet pellets and suet balls. No seed hanging feeders, just too much mess with them. Calci worms and raisins. And live mealworms now and again.
Re: What are you putting in your bird feeders
I've just had a sack of mixed seed delivered, 'Copdock Mill' was the cheapest I could find at £20 for 20kg (it's suddenly gone up to £41!!). It'll keep everyone happy I'm sure, it's got decent reviews.
Do you lot buy in bulk? Which mixed seed brand do you/the birds prefer?

I buy in bulk off Amazon. For sunflower kernels I buy 20kg bags from the cheapest on offer. For mixed seed I use Johnson and Jeff premium. Very little gets wasted so the customers must be happy.
