Misterious green birds

Post by Butterfly »

There are 3 green birds in the neighbourhood and I can't work out what birds they are
I started seeing them from some time in Oct/Nov, they are medium size with long tails, maybe dove size but different shape, longer bodies.
They dash off every time I try to take a picture, but I managed to take a couple of pics and a video today to show you guys, in hope someone might know what birds they are :)
Sorry about the quality of pics and video, I was trying to take them fast before they fly away :sofa:

Video shows more how they sound:

Hello butterfly. My best guess is ring neck parakeets. They are in London and the south east. Numbers are increasing quite rapidly, and are now spreading beyond the south east in a northerly and westerly direction. I can see that one of them has a long tail in the second photo, the one near the top. The one above the bottom one can see that there is a ring around its neck. Maybe clutching at straws but is what it looks like to me.

 I think you are right Willpar! I just looked online at the pictures of ring neck parakeets and I think its them  Omg! I've never seen these birds before, and was going to say they look like parrots who escaped from cage  , and I would have been right, they have, only long time ago

They have been here for a lot of years now butterfly. How they got here no one really knows. One line of thought was that the film " The African Queen " with Humphrey Bogart was made at the studios over here and the parrots escaped.Others just say that they escaped from people cages or aviary`s. Whichever way they got here they are well established now. Their numbers are in the thousands, that is why they are spreading. I seen one once flying, but that was in Hyde Parkin London. Was up there for a day. They are quite at home here, as I believe they come from the foothills of the hymalayas, a cold climate at the best of times.

And Manchester, that's a fair way up.

Going to have another look to see if they are farther up still.

Had a look around for more information. They have reached the Scottish borders and westward into Wales. Numbers are estimated to be around 30.000.
