A book containing the Cotswold dialect from Gloucestershire has come into my possession. In accordance with many country dialects they had special names for the wildlife and in particular the birds they saw. To make things a little easier the answers are multiple choice. The aim is to match the right bird with the old country name,
Name One COLLY is either a) Song Thrush b) Mistle Thrush or c) Blackbird
Name Two QUIST is either a) Wood Pigeon, b) Magpie or c) Jackdaw
Name Three HOOP is either a) Goldfinch, b) Bullfinch or c) Greenfinch
The prize for 3 out of 3 is a weekend in the beautiful Wee Glen.

Well done Butterfly 3 outa 3
Your prize will be dispatched by Sturkmail sometime and delivered when your not expecting it. Stock up your larder and stay indoors until they've been.
P.S. They don't work Chrimbo Day as they all go around to Biker's for Urkmass Pudding

Guessin': 1. (c) - 2. (c) - 3. (c)
These abstruse very localised country names are very interesting, Jacksparrow. Difficult to see the connection but there you go. Corrupted Anglo-Saxon maybe.

I agree they are very difficult. I think they were in use in the area of the Cotswolds that includes Cirencester and Stroud. I am originally from north Gloucestershire and all birds were called by the names we recognise today.
