nuthatch wrote:Yes, Placi - mainly slate. The local slate which was quarried in Abereiddi and nearby Porthgain and Trefin was of a poor quality and had to be covered with a coat of mortar to make it waterproof.

When I read this it became clear why the roofs look so funny (to us). They look as though they're not yet finished. They put narrow slats of wood over the slate at intervals and then cover the whole lot with mortar. You can probably just make it out in two of the photos.

I've have another theory as to why they do the roofs like that. That part of Wales is well exposed to the westerly gales we seem to get nearly all year round so perhaps it is a belt and braces job to keep the slate tiles on the roof. :)

The thatch on crofters' cottages on, say, the Isle of Skye, were weighed down with heavy stones because of the westerly gales.

 Probably should have organised something similar on lead roofs  although it would probably have interfered with the ventilation

I wonder what Private Eye will have now - could have the Women's Institute with the men masquerading as women  hope it's not another educational establishment.

I liked Tony Blair as the vicar :)

Oh, I hope Hislop isn't going to go all sexist and have the ladies' powder room at No. 10.
If so, I may have to consider cancelling my subscription or try to get out more.
