Plant ID

Post by Willpar »

Does anyone know what this plant is. The bees love it, and is around 8-10 feet tall. Not the best of pics as taken a still from a video.

Hi Placi, I reckon I have found it, Echium Pininana `pink fountain` hails from the Canaries and Madeira. It was buzzing with bees. Rather expensive though, I found one place that sells and they were two plants for forty quid.

Hi Willpar - googled your plant and, yes, you'd have a gardenful of bees if you planted this.
PS: a packet of seeds is £3.20 and it flowers in the 2nd year so that's not bad.
Your vid is eagerly anticipated .

Hi Placi, I have found a dwarf echium. The grower found it by chance at his nursery. And sells the seeds.
Take a look here, lovely colour by the way and dense.

That's gorgeous, Willpar, like bunches of gentians :). Prefer that colour to the pink 8 ft tall one !

Must admit placi, I just love that blue. I am getting tempted to buy a packet of seed.

Edit, I have hit on an idea. Will probably buy a packet of the dwarf blue seeds, but where that giant one is, I remember seeing it there through the years, so may raise them. Will ask if I can scrounge a plant if they have any in pots. I speak to the owner now and again, his father worked at the same place as I did. So if I can scrounge a plant, will save me a whole year. Don't hurt to ask.

You know the old saying, if you don't ask then you don't know.

Got a one year old plant and a couple of seedlings. Will get the lady a packet of dwarf blue seeds.
