The size of the photo makes it difficult to identify. It is the right colour for a Meadow Brown. :)

Thank you and goodnight, Nuthatch - I knew someone wouldn't be able to resist that one :haha: Oops, hadn't noticed the shadow - very amateurish !!

Meadow Brown, Jacksparrow - OK. (Just checked that and it wasn't  ) I know it's rather small and its wings weren't properly spread.
Actually I've firkled around on Google and the closest I can come so far is a Fritillary. Thing is, there seem to be so many Frits I guess identification will remain a mystery.

Were there any marks on the wings or were they mainly light brown. Have a look at a Small Skipper :)

Yes, black freckles all over the wings and the outside of the wings was just plain dusky dark brown.

Just checked Small Skipper, Jacksparrow - no, but the colour's correct.

(Actually I feel very guilty about this whole thing - no-one else monopolises the airwaves with one very bad photo of an orange butterfly :( .)

The S.P. is known to chummy up with the Fossa ( ). Both dark, shadowy, mysterious, semi-legendary creatures lurk in dense shrubbery and climb trees.
Neither can take good pix ....... :photo: :(

A couple more suggestions. Have a look for a Wall Brown or a Small Copper. a is difficult to tell just how big the butterfly is in your photo. How big did it look from wing tip to wing tip with the wings open. Inches will do or fractions thereof.

OK. But how big is it. This is critical for positive ID.
