Yes this is true; however in German the word 'Taube' (for pigeon) takes the feminine gender. Therefore my wife and I refer to this bird as 'she'.
But maybe this she will acually turn out to be a he.

In the case of our Magpie 'Maggie' I witnessed her being the one underneath during mating so that sayes it all 100%.

Today the Wood Pigeon I've been reporting about arrived this morning with a 'guest'. It was a rather funny looking juvinile Wood Pigeon which was almost an adult but not quite. This bird was a wee bit shorter than its mum, lacked the usual irredescant pink on the chest and neck, had more rust brown on its back than pigeon blue-gray and lacked the white 'officer's insignia' on its neck.
It was also rather clumsy and very thirsty at the birdbath on my balcony, falling in while trying to drink! Haha! However the mum wasted no time in flying up atop my pergola to feed and then the young one followed suit. They both layed comfortably on their bellies up there, side by side, for a long time eating sunflower seeds. It was indeed a beautiful sight afterwards how they both so gracefully departed, flying a curve up to the oak trees where they roost, in the woods behind my garden.
