We all know that magpies are part of the Corvid family which is known to be clever. I was watching one in my garden this morning trying to peck at the fat balls hanging feeder. It was just out of reach so the Magpie had a lunge and connected with the feeder and set it swinging. When the feeder swung towards the Magpie it found it could get a decent peck at the fat balls. Having learnt this lesson it then set the feeder swinging every time before trying to peck the fat balls. Brilliant.

They soon learn. I get a regular most days come into the garden. Sometimes get two.

I had a magpie fledgling in my garden today. It was obviously guided by parents, but also, the whole flock came to welcome the little one and introduce themselves! They were going close to him/her, inspecting him almost. He looked very unsure of himself and just stayed in one spot for a long time. Than he found a water dish and found it very fascinating as he wouldn't move from it and kept drinking water. It was very sweet and funny, the whole episode

Yep! Like all newcomers they need to meet the folks and view the facilities.
