I read the para about the (non-)extinct spider and got it completely wrong

. My initial thought was that it had dropped into and drowned in a water bath on a bird table

The last Painted Lady invasion was in 2009. I went to Bude for a weeks holiday and they were absolutely everywhere. I think we may have to wait for a friendly wind from the south to get them this time.

The one in the photos above is a Small Tortoiseshell.
The Comma looks a bit washed out but that may be a trick played by your camera's metering.
