FROGS

A frog in each pond today. I am a little concerned that the freshly relined pond will not be able to support any tadpoles should there be any spawn deposited. Their usual first food is the green algae that has accumulated on the liner underwater. At present there is very little and even less marginal plants to generate any. Time will tell as the first tadpole is probably at least a month away. The other pond is OK but that will not be able to support huge numbers.

The cooler weather means the frogs have disappeared again
This time last years the temperature was in the 20s and we had loads of them. This year..

I think that's called a 'truism'. If not it should be - ask a frog .

Todays oddball weather (sunny,warm with thundery downpours) shows the frogs in two different lights. Sunny and warm sees them skulking in the pond trying to grab the occasional unwary fly whereas as soon as the rain starts in earnest they all jump out of the ponds and scatter around the garden.

Why on earth do they do that ?? - the jumping and the scattering.

May be clutching at straws here but here goes. I wonder if it has anything to do with how sound travels through water. If the frogs are underwater I would imagine the sound of the rain hitting the water could be quite deafening.

I have pondered on that theory in the past. They will even do it while paired up for spawning which gives weight to that.
