They do but they're not wedded to it. I have seen them in hedgerows but there is often a small watercourse somewhere nearby.

Was a bit surprised to see it jacksparrow, and only 60 yards or so from my house.

For 2 consecutive winters I had a grey wag on a daily basis. Only water is the pond.

Could be right there nuthatch. But if it only followed me home could have joined my winter pieds for mealworm feast.

Down in the near lanes in a field that had sheep I saw a little egret fly up. Talking to a local, was informed they get there quite often.

I don't know if you are aware but there is a relative of the Little Egret(but much rarer) called the Cattle Egret. It got it's name because it favours fields containing livestock. I'm not saying that's what you saw because it probably wasn't but they are worth looking out for.

Funny you should say that jacksparrow. But on the local news a few years back there were cattle egrets in cornwall. Not many. The person I was talking to goes to france quite often and she sees the cattle egrets there.

Yesterday's cold morning saw the return of a couple of Redpolls to my garden. I'm still waiting for a Siskin which also usually turn up once the wild larder has been run down. :)
